The heart of our first spiritual priority here at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship: God-centered expressive worship!
Music is certainly an integral part of the many biblical expressions of worship. We believe it is one of the highest forms of worship expression. The New Testament reiterates the fact that Christianity is a singing faith (Ephesians 5:19; James 5:13). With indescribable displays of color, movement, sound and music, the book of Revelation gives us dazzling glimpses of the eternal worship in heaven that now goes on and is yet to be. We believe that powerful musical worship that invites the presence of God draws people--even unbelievers, rather than repels them.
But worship involves much more: it engages the total expression of our lives: “To worship is to quicken the conscience by the holiness of God, to feed the mind with the truth of God, to purge the imagination by the beauty of God, to open the heart to the love of God, to devote the will to the purpose of God” (Archbishop William Temple). In each of these activities, by whatever means we engage to pursue them, we are using all of our human faculties to experience the fullness of what it means to worship God.
“Worship is nothing less than obedience to the command of God: ‘Delight yourself in the LORD’! (Psalm 37:4)…Worship is a way of gladly reflecting back to God the radiance of His worth. It is not a mere act of will power by which we perform outward acts. Without the engagement of the heart, we do not really worship. The engagement of the heart in worship is the coming alive of the feelings and emotions and affections of the heart. Where feelings for God are dead, worship is dead... Strong affections for God rooted in truth are the bone and marrow of biblical worship...It follows that forms of worship should provide two things: channels for the mind to apprehend the truth of God’s reality and channels for the heart to respond to the beauty of that truth—that is, forms to ignite the affections with biblical truth and forms to express the affections with biblical passion” (John Piper).
